Colima
Early Colima is probably the most homogeneous of West Mexican styles, for its famous hollow figures are unified by the familiar light orange to deep red burnished slip with black patina spotting the surface. On occasion the black spots are so numerous as to make black the dominan color. Black is also frequently achieed through reduction firing.
Besides
the classic Colima pieces are those in the Coahuayna Valley substyle, the
Pihuamo style, an hollow figure that may be of the Postclassic period. In
addition, there are a number of small objects in shell and stone, wich are
said to have been found with classic Colima figures.
